School is out for summer, and Im here to help you and your kids beat summer boredom with fun recipes youll love making together as part of Camp PBS Parents. We at PBS Parents are here to partner with you and your family to encourage fun, learning, creativity, and making memories. Ill be your camp chef through the summer bringing you fun and easy recipes your kids will ask to make, and youll definitely want to eat. To start our series off Im bringing you a classic camp recipe with a delicious twist.
Everyone loves a good smore, but over the years Ive thought about how a piece of thick chocolate candy bar doesnt functionally work very well. The warm roasted marshmallow rarely is hot enough to melt the chocolate, so it can be messy and unpleasant when the sandwich breaks apart. Am I right, or am I right?
Ive come up with a better solution (I know - blasphemous for the smore purist). Instead of a piece of chocolate, Im suggesting Nutella, a soft hazelnut chocolate spread. Its easier and works much better, trust me on this. Just spread about a teaspoon on to the graham cracker square and youre ready to go. All you need is the roasted marshmallow. Just to go a little gourmet on you, I like to add about five fresh raspberries after the Nutella spread to give it a little bit of a sweet yet tart fruity layer of flavor. It complements the Nutella and marshmallows in a way that may change the way you think about smores forever.
Roasting marshmallows over an open camp fire is fun, but if you dont have an open fire handy these smores can also be made using the broiler function in your oven. In fact, there is nothing stopping you from camping indoors tonight! Building a fort or tent out of sheets in your living room in the comforts of your own home is a great family activity that your children will love, especially if you turn off the lights when it gets dark outside and use only flashlights and candles. One added benefit of camping indoors is not having to walk to a smelly outhouse in the middle of the night. Instead your staycation camp ground comes with a shower and a toilet!
Heres to a great start to summer! I hope you give Nutella Raspberry Smores a try and let us know how you like them. Enjoy!
It does not take much Nutella per s'more. Just about a teaspoon or slightly less. Fresh raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries will work with this recipe.
