Watermelon is refreshing, sweet, and ready to eat during the summer months here in the U.S. Although watermelon was not Indigenous, written records of watermelon cultivation in the Americas go back to the early 1600s. Historians believe watermelon seeds were introduced to the Americas by European settlers and enslaved Africans, but archaeobotanists believe the watermelon was first domesticated thousands of years ago in Northeastern Africa. In fact, depictions of watermelon have been found in an ancient Egyptian tomb dating back at least 4000 years ago.
